Press release Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology
Bremen, 18 November 2009
The OCEANS 09 Local Organising Committee from the Bremen marine research institutes MARUM, Alfred Wegener Institute, University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven, Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology and the conference team from Messe Bremen won a medal for their outstanding performance. Prof. Rene Garello, Vice president of the Oceanic Engineering Society (IEEE) handed over the medal during a visit in Bremen on Wednesday, 18 November 2009.
During OCEANS09 more than 1000 scientists and engineers and more than 100 international exhibitors met in May 2009 in the Bremen Congess Center to discuss modern approaches in marine science and engineering. A special feature of the conference was aside of several scientific sessions the young students program. The kids were invited to build their own submarine vehicles and had several contests to demonstrate their skills in a 60 000 liter aquarium.
Rene Garello summarized his impressions: " The Bremen OCEANS 09 atmosphere was very special. I think the welcoming attitude of the Local Organising Committee is the trademark of Bremen. We had the feeling that a real team was at work!".
The Oceanic Engineering Society and the IEEE invite scientists and engineers for more than 30 years to OCEANS conferences. Some of the Bremen special topics covered ecology, renewable energy and the wadden seas. The Bremen OCEANS09 was the first German conference.
