May 22, 2025

We congratulate to this outstanding honor.

Marine researcher Prof. Dr. Antje Boetius, head of a bridge group at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen and professor at the University of Bremen, has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, one of the highest scientific honors in the world. The Royal Society thus recognizes her outstanding achievements in deep-sea and polar research.

Boetius is one of over 90 researchers from around the world to receive this honor this year. In spring 2025, the former Scientific Director of the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven moved to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) in California, one of the most internationally renowned institutes for ocean research and marine technologies, as Director.

The Royal Society is a Fellowship of many of the world's most eminent scientists. “It is with great pleasure that I welcome the latest cohort of outstanding researchers into the Fellowship of the Royal Society”, said Sir Adrian Smith, President of the Royal Society on the organisation’s website. (…) Their achievements represent the very best of scientific endeavour,. “The strength of the Fellowship lies not only in individual excellence, but in the diversity of backgrounds, perspectives and experiences each new member brings. This cohort represents the truly global nature of modern science and the importance of collaboration in driving scientific breakthroughs.” The Fellows and Foreign Members join the ranks of Stephen Hawking, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Lise Meitner, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar and Dorothy Hodgkin.
