From a drop to the ocean: scaling up microbial interactions with dissolved organic matter

Microbially mediated processes on small scales impact biogeochemical cycles on planetary scales, with the potential of feedback mechanisms in a changing climate. However, we are currently lacking the tools to assess these feedbacks because global biogeochemical models usually do not explicity consider the heterotrophic community or microbial interactions as such. In this talk I will give two examples on how upscaling can be addressed in numerical models. First, I will show that explicitly considering the heterotrophic microbial community in a global biogeochemical model may change the sign of the feedback of dissolved organic carbon storage in a future climate scenario. In a second example, experimental results on phototroph-heterotroph interactions are translated into a mathematical framework to scale up the impact of active interactions to complex microbial communities.
