From saltmarshes to the Arctic Ocean - microbial cycling of organosulfur compounds

Organic sulfur compounds including dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), dimethylsulfide (DMS), and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) are produced and degraded by a wide range of microorganisms. In doing so, they affect sulfur fluxes between the marine and terrestrial environment and produce trace gasses and precursors of organic aerosol that affect atmospheric chemistry and climate. I will provide an overview of recent and ongoing work analysing the diversity of sulfur cycling microorganisms in diverse environments which we have done as part of the MOSAiC consortium and in collaboration with colleagues in Oldenburg and Norwich.
