Microorganisms are ubiquitous on Earth and are present in almost every environment including extreme habitats such as Arctic glaciers, salt lakes, and at high pressure in the deep sea. Furthermore, they contribute significantly to the total biomass on earth. Microorganisms have shaped the environment throughout Earth's history and continuously evolve to adapt to the changes in the biosphere; changes for which they are often responsible themselves. Scientists at our institutes are harnessing cutting-edge tools for a deep dive into these adaptations, from exploring novel pathways, leveraging imaging for behavior insights to conducting assays on their molecular biological activity. This broad spectrum of laboratory methodologies are often combined with environmental data to uncover how microbes interact with the environment. We welcome all applications assessing the adaptations of microbial systems whether across generations or nearly instantaneous.
