May 22, 2025

Historic Success: University of Bremen acquires funding for two Clusters of Excellence for the first time – including “The Ocean Floor – Earth's Uncharted Interface”

Congratulations also come from our institute director Prof Dr Rudolf Amann: ‘The Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen congratulates the University of Bremen on this great success! We are very much looking forward to continuing our many years of successful collaboration with MARUM,’ says Amann.

The German Research Foundation (DFG) announced the funding decision for the new Clusters of Excellence on May 22. From January 1, 2026, the Clusters of Excellence “The Ocean Floor – Earth's Uncharted Interface” and “The Martian Mindset: A Scarcity-Driven Engineering Paradigm” at the University of Bremen will receive funding.

“We are grateful for the support of our employees, the states of Bremen and Lower Saxony, and our international cooperation partners. This renewed success would not have been possible without their commitment and partnership,” emphasizes Professor Kai-Uwe Hinrichs, Director of MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences of the University of Bremen. “We look forward to continuing to contribute to society with our joint research in the future.”
