We cordially invite you to join an exciting talk of the american scientist Chris German from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) on Thursday, April 7.

The talk will explain how space- and deep-sea research can jointly promote the exploration of extreme environments. It is titled:

Hydrothermal Exploration in Distant Oceans - Lessons from Earth for the Outer Solar System

Chris German is a Senior Scientist at WHOI who spent most of the past decade as the US Chief Scientist for Deep Submergence, before returning to full time research in 2015. His expertise is in the use of advanced technologies for exploration of the deep ocean and, specifically, sites of seafloor fluid flow that sustain chemosynthetic ecosystems. Some of his most important discoveries relate to venting in specific geologic settings that can allow for the abiotic synthesis of prebiotic molecules and, hence, might be particularly relevant to the origins of life. Most recently, he has developed an interest in Astrobiology and the lessons that can be learned from Earth for future exploration of the outer solar system. In Feb 2016, Chris joined the Roadmap for Ocean Worlds team that has just been established by NASA’s Outer Planets Assessment Group.

When: 3:00 pm
Where: New Auditorium (4th floor)
